Energy efficiency tips

»Use lights efficiently
Rooms are often excessively lit. Make sure you are not using a higher wattage bulb than is necessary.
» Food and garden waste
Food production generates greenhouse gases.
» Use your dishwasher efficiently
A dishwasher can generate up to 500 kilograms of greenhouse gas a year.
» Go fluoro
Flourescent lamps cut greenhouse gas emissions and running costs by 75 per cent. Australia is phasing out inefficient incandescent light bulbs and replacing them with efficient lighting technology such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).
» Refuse, reduce, re-use, recycle
Australians produce 17 million tonnes of solid waste each year just by throwing things away. That's one tonne for every person.
» Cool your house
On hot days, close the house and shade all windows in the morning to block out the summer heat, then when it cools down outside, open the house to breezes.
» Hot water
Showers are the biggest users of hot water in most homes. A 3-star water efficient showerhead can save more than 500 kilograms of greenhouse gas each year, if you have an electric hot water service.
» Use the washing machine effectively
Wash clothes in cold water: you will generate less than a third of a kilogram of greenhouse gas per wash. Heating the water for a hot wash generates up to 4 kilograms of greenhouse gas.
» Turn it off!
A large screen TV, used 6 hours a day, can generate around half a tonne of greenhouse gas each year—more than a family fridge. So enjoy your big screen TV, just turn it off if you aren’t watching it!
