Out + about: National Schools Tree Day, Malabar Public School

25 July 2008

I joined the enthusiastic students and staff at Malabar Public School to participate in National Schools Tree Day.

The school, in partnership with Randwick Council, is replanting a garden bed at the school's entrance on Franklin St. The council developed the design, and supplied plants and expertise while the students, staff and parents helped with planting and mulching

Malabar Public School has developed a fantastic and comprehensive environment program. The program includes vegetable and herb gardens, a worm farm, recycling bins and a water tank.

Pete's tips

Use lights efficiently

» Rooms are often excessively lit. Make sure you are not using a higher wattage bulb than is necessary.
» Turn off unnecessary lights, including fluorescent lamps especially if leaving a room for more than ten minutes.
» Clean light fittings regularly to allow more light to pass through.
» Decorating with light coloured finishes and furnishings can allow lighting levels to be reduced.
