Out + about: Kingsford Smith young achievers

12 September 2008

I met two fantastic young people who are demonstrating great commitment to the environment.

Adam Fahy-Majeed, a year 6 student from Coogee, has organised a petition to 'Ban the butt' from Coogee Beach.

Michelle Lyons, a UNSW masters student, is attending the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change conference in Poland later this year as a member of the Australian youth delegation.

I enjoyed talking to Adam and Michelle about their initiatives and look forward to hearing of their progress.

Pete's tips

Use lights efficiently

» Rooms are often excessively lit. Make sure you are not using a higher wattage bulb than is necessary.
» Turn off unnecessary lights, including fluorescent lamps especially if leaving a room for more than ten minutes.
» Clean light fittings regularly to allow more light to pass through.
» Decorating with light coloured finishes and furnishings can allow lighting levels to be reduced.
